Natural Sunburn Remedies
It went from winter to summer here in North Idaho real fast! I don't know about you but I'm looking pretty pale from the long winter. The first few interactions with the sun turn me red almost guaranteed (even with sunscreen!) I thought I'd share with you all some of my favorite remedies for healing sunburns naturally since I have had a lot of experience in this department unfortunately. Check out my 3 faverites to use below!
1. Aloe Vera
Its number one for a reason! It is the most commonly known remedy for a sunburn but make sure you are buying the real deal, 100% Aloe! I like to leave mine in the fridge so it is extra cooling! Aloe has a long history for being used to help aid the healing of burns. It helps cool and hydrate the skin as well as helps to ease the burning sensation.
2. Apple Cider Vinegar, Lavender, and Peppermint Spray.
I came up with this spray last summer and love it! The vinegar helps to ease the pain, itching and inflammation. The lavender reduces sting, redness, and speeds up the healing process. Peppermint is great for cooling the burn down, it's a natural painkiller soothing the area and can also help with headaches often another side affect of sunburns.
3. Black Tea
The first thing I do after getting sunburnt, if possible, is make a cup of very strong black tea. Let cool slightly and hop into a cold shower. After cooling off I turn off the water, pour the tea all over the burn and let sit, don't rinse it off!. Black tea gives relief to the pain from its tannic acid!
Getting sunburnt is no fun and really damages the skin, but for some of us there is just no avoiding it! Some other tips: I wear Honest Company Sunscreen since many other brands are filled with so many toxic ingredients (have bought at Costco for good deal before) I take turmeric to help with swelling immediately after I realize I am burnt, and drink lots of water (especially coconut water).
